In week one, tutorial #1, I learned how to narrow down a
search in the UMGC library using OneSearch. In this weeks
lessions I learned how to narrow the library search down even
more. This is a very helpful tip to know when using the UMGC
library. Before learning how to narrow my searches down, it
was very intimidating using the OneSearch data base.
For this week, I used the same key word “holistic medicine”
AND “herbs” under the advance search. The difference from
last week is I used the SU subject terms in the drop-down box.
I didn’t need to use the subject filter because this already
narrowed my search down enough. Last week I had 105
results available. This week, by selecting the SU subject terms,
it narrowed it down to 2 results. Out of the 2 results I selected
the e book
Culpeper’s medicine: A Practice of Western Holistic
Medicine
by Graeme Tobyn.
Write a thesis: a one-sentence statement which expresses the author's main idea. Make sure to
include the author of the work.
Step Two: Significant Details
Provide significant details from important passages that support the thesis.
Pay attention to the following: eliminate repetition and less important information,
disregard minor details, use as few words as possible to convey the main idea and be sure
the summary is approximately 10-20% the length of the original passage.
Step Three: Conclusion
Provide the author’s conclusions based upon the thesis and research. Do not add your
opinion.
Graeme Tobyn explains the holistic practices Nicholas culpeper
performed, a 17

-century herbalist, and provides insight and
studies on more modern holistic medical traditions in the west.
Tobyn provides a study of 20 common herbs used for medical
purposes. He believes that disease and preservation of health
can be accomplished by practicing holistic medical practices.
This book has a section on herbal medicine that has a study of
20 common herbs used for medical purposes. The book
explains the holistic approach to the prevention of disease and
preservation of health. The author explains gives insight into
the explanation of holistic medicine and the effects on the
body and mind. It is a resource for those that are interested in
western holistic medicine and its origins.
