Nadal-Vicens, M., & Beresin, G. (2023, June 8).
International College Students: Challenges and
Solutions
. MGH Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds.
https://www.mghclaycenter.org/parenting-concerns/young-adults/international-college-
students/
(Nadal-Vicens & Beresin, 2023) is a popular source belonging to The Clay Center for
Young Healthy Minds, it is part of the collection of informational resources provided by the
Massachusetts General Hospital. The Massachusetts General Hospital or MGH was the first
teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School (Wikimedia Foundation, 2023). According to an
article by MGH titled:
“
Mass General Brigham Reports Fiscal Year 2022 Financial Results
,”
MGH had a total revenue of $16.7 billion in 2022 (Mass General Brigham, 2022). In addition, a
hospital rankings list made by a highly reputable source called: U.S. News & World Report,
ranked Massachusetts General Hospital #8 in
their “Best Hospitals Honor Roll
2023-
2024”
rankings (U.S. News & World Report, 2023). The authors are Mireya Nadal-Vicens, M.D.,
Ph.D., and Gene Beresin, M.D., M.A. Nadal-Vicens is a researcher in the Center for Anxiety and
Traumatic Stress Disorders and Center for Addiction Medicine at MGH, in addition, she is an
instructor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Gene Beresin is executive director of the
MGH Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds. He has been invited as a keynote speaker at both
local and global conferences (The Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds, 2022).
The authors drafted this article in response to the specific challenges faced by
international college students. The problem at hand is the adjustment difficulties, academic
pressures, and emotional challenges that these students encounter when studying abroad, often
far from their home countries. Therefore, the authors are specifically writing about the
experiences and challenges of international college students. The primary objective of this article
is to raise awareness of the challenges international college students face and to provide insights
into potential solutions. The authors contribute valuable insights into the experiences of
international college students and offer potential solutions for educators and institutions to better
support them. They provide a nuanced understanding of the issues and propose strategies that
can enhance the well-being and success of international students in the context of higher
education. Finally, the article's ideas and suggestions can be beneficial to international students,
helping them navigate the challenges they face while studying abroad. It also serves as a resource
for educators and institutions to enhance their support systems and make international students'
experiences more positive and fulfilling.
My research question is “How might achievement gaps affect low
-income minority
students at George Mason University and what can the faculty do about this problem?”
(Nadal-
Vicens & Beresin, 2023) presents challenges faced by international college students, as well as
solutions for those challenges from a psychological perspective. Even though achievement gaps
and low-income minority students are not the focus of the article, we can still apply it to those
themes because the challenges themselves can transform into achievement gaps and these are
faced by low-income minority students too. The material provided by (Nadal-Vicens & Beresin,
2023) can be used for new offering and object of study (challenges). Also, this serves as an
additional and reliable support material that can help me formulate more ways and bring more
issues to the table to convince GMU faculty and President Gregory Washington.
