Bob was 56 years old male who smoked a pack a day and had high blood pressure. Since he
was in college, Bob has eaten fast food for breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, dinner, and
dessert. As a result he has multiple aneurysms and clogged arteries as you can see below.
For EACH of the final destinations complete the following:
1. Match the
initial plaque
deposit location to the
final destination.
●
Ex. The aneurysm at final destination #1 was caused by an initial plaque deposit
in the Brachiocephalic artery.
-
Final Destination: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
-
Initial plaque deposit location: Descending aorta
-
Pathway: Descending aorta (initial plaque location) —> Abdominal Aorta—> Aortic
aneurysm
-
Consequence: The aneurysm in Bob’s abdominal aorta could have ruptured, leading
to severe internal bleeding and potentially death.
2. Draw or write out the pathway between the initial plaque deposit and its final
destination.
●
Ex. The pathway is as follows: Brachiocephalic (
initial plaque location
) -->
Common carotid --> Internal carotid --> middle cerebral (this is the
final
destination
)
-
Final Destination: Stroke in the left hemisphere of the brain.
-
Initial Plaque deposit location: Brachiocephalic artery
-
Pathway: Brachiocephalic artery—> Common Carotid—> Internal Carotid—>
Middle cerebral artery
-
Consequence: The plaque buildup in Bob’s brachiocephalic artery could have led to a
blood clot that traveled to his brain, causing a stroke that affects the left hemisphere.
This could have resulted in paralysis, speech and language difficulties, and other
neurological deficits.
3. What happened to Bob because of this?
●
Ex. A clogged artery in location 1 would cause him to lose circulation in his brain.
-
Final Destination: Peripheral artery disease in left leg
-
Initial plaque deposit location: Left subclavian artery
-
Pathway: Left subclavian artery —> Left common carotid —> left external carotid
—> Left superficial femoral artery —> left popliteal artery —> left anterior tibial
artery
-
The plaque buildup in Bob’s left subclavian artery could lead to reduced blood flow
to his left leg resulting in pain, numbness, and weakness. In severe cases, tissue
damage or amputation could happen.
4. Which one of these problems killed him in the end. (Yes... Bob is dead).
-
Final Destination: Heart attack
-
Initial plaque deposit location: Coronary artery
-
Pathway: Coronary artery —> Branches of the coronary artery that supply blood to
the heart muscle —> heart muscle
-
A heart attack killed Bob because of the reduced blood flow to Bob’s heart muscle
which led to chest pain, shortness of breath which resulted in a heart attack.
Initial plaque locations
: (these can be used once, more than once, or not at all)
●
descending aorta
●
left subclavian artery
●
brachiocephalic artery
●
common iliac artery
●
coronary artery
