HA3001: Cultural and Genetic Influences on Health Competency Discussion Discussion Question One experience that I had was when one of my patients did not speak English as his first language. When I got report on this patient, I was aware that he did not speak very much English and he spoke primarily Spanish. I know some Spanish but I am not fluent in it, so I thought it would be a good idea to get a translator. This was very helpful for me to explain and collect his health history and it was helpful to him because then he could understand what we were doing and what I was asking. I ensured that I was interacting in a culturally proficient way because I was taking directly to my patient and not to the translator, so the patient knew I was talking to him and he was the priority in this situation.
