Week 3 – Study Question
Do a brief report in which you compare the Web sites of the American Medical Writers’
Association (AMWA), Europe’s Medical Writers’ Association (EMWA), and AMWA-Canada Web
sites. What can you tell about the three organizations? How are they similar and how are they
different? What cultural differences do you see?
I searched for a long period of time for the AMWA-Canada website. I was unable to find
their website. I will be comparing the American Medical Writers’ Association (AMWA), Europe’s
Medical Writers’ Association (EMWA), and Health Writers Hub.
These organizations are a network of professionals that represents, supports and trains
medical communicators. They provide educational resources in support of providing excellence
in medical communication. AMWA was founded in 1940, EMWA was founded in 1989, and
Health Writer’s Hub was founded in 2014. AMWA has over 4,000 members in the US, Canada,
and 30 other countries. EMWA has over 1,000 members from 39 different countries. Health
Writer’s Hub does not state how many members, but does have students in 37 countries. It was
started by the president of the Australasian Medical Writers Association.
One major cultural difference I noticed is the EMWA has the option of several different
languages, such as Italian and French, located in the About Us section. I do not see an option to
change the language on the AMWA website. There is an events calendar on the AMWA website
while the EMWA has a future conference section. I also noticed the AMWA offers certification
by an exam only given in English. You must be qualified to take this exam by either holding a
bachelor or advanced degree (in any field) and having at least 2 years of paid work experience in
1
the medical communication field. The EMWA offers a career guide to medical writing. The
EMWA offers many certificates from workshops which is broken into 6 areas of expertise:
Language and Writing, Medical Communication, Medical Devices, Medical Science and
Professional Techniques. Health Writer’s Hub has 4 main courses with Introduction To Health
Writing being their main course. Introduction To Health Writing is a Continuing Professional
Development Certified course. I did not notice any major cultural differences on the Health
Writer’s Hub website.
I found the EMWA website was easy to navigate and find information. The quick links on
the top of the website has more options than the AMWA website. When searching through
journals, the EMWA website allowed me see the current journal easily without having to create
an account
Language and Writing, Medical Communication, Medical Devices, Medical Science
and Professional Techniques. The AMWA website requires an account. Health Writer’s Hub also
allows me to search journals without a login. It is well organized but does not have as many
quick links as the EMWA website making it a little more difficult to navigate.
