ICD 10 Codes
Codes according to 2023 New ICD-10-CM codes (n.d.)
F31 bipolar disorder, past medical history states the patient was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 6 years ago.
F53 postpartum depression, it is reported that after the patient had her third child she went into a terrible depression.
F43.10 PTSD, the soap notes reports that the patient has had a rough childhood. The patient was in and out of foster care where she was physically and sexually abused.
F43.21 grief, since she was found in the funeral home parking lot and the letter she wrote regarding her parents, it shows that she is experiencing unnormal grief.
T50.902A overdose. The patient is first described in the note as being found in her car after a suicidal attempt by overdose. For this I choose the code T50.902A, initial self-
harm due to drug poisoning (overdose).
F32.9, depression. The patient’s past medical history reports she was diagnosed with depression in her teenage years. explore how the ICD-10 Codes that you assigned impact third party payor
reimbursement for this visit.
According to Mainor et al. (2019), the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a tool that assigns codes for diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, circumstances, and external causes of diseases or injury. The ICD- 10 not only helps to improve the quality of patient care performed but they help third party payors reimburse for services. The ICD-10 code provides the insurance companies with data about the patient's visit. The insurance companies can then map these procedures by the specialties in which they are associated. Thus, ensuring that certain procedures are medically necessary. Upon deeming the claims that are submitted are substantial, providers get reimbursed. According to Caskey et al. (2018), the better the documentation and the more information the providers give, the greater the reimbursement from third parties will be. 2023 New ICD-10-CM codes

Hi Jennifer,
Very through post this week on the many different ICD codes. We agree on some of the ICD codes such as bipolar disorder and PTSD. We both used an ICD code for the self-harm, but I utilized the overdose code, and you chose the suicide attempt. According to the World Health Organization (n.d.), ICD codes are important because they provide a common language for recording, reporting, and monitoring diseases. Furthermore, this allows the world to compare and
share data in a consistent and standard way between hospitals, regions, and countries and over periods of time. ICD coding is used to evaluate health care costs, predict future healthcare costs, process, and receive payment from insurance companies, and to track utilization of services (WHO, n.d.).
Additionally, proper coding is critical to receive payment for services performed.

Hi Matt, I appreciate your post this week and through explanation of the ICD codes you utilized. We agree
on some of the codes. You utilized code T42.6X2A Poisoning by other antiepileptic and sedative-
hypnotic drugs, intentional self-harm, initial encounter, whereas I used code T50.902A, initial self-harm due to drug poisoning (overdose). I think both would work in this situation. According to Qin and Mehlum (2020), t
he form of injuries was grouped into 6 categories, including 1) poisoning with medications (G1), 2) poisoning with other substances (G2), 3) injury on forearms,
hands, wrists, and arms (G3), 4) injury on other specific parts of body (G4), 5) injuries by suffocation, embedment of foreign objects, drowning and burning, etc. (G5), 6) other injuries not
covered above (G6).
