1. Please explain both of the following (2000 characters): a. The specific reason(s) you have chosen to apply to WMed b. How you will utilize the unique features of WMed's mission, vision, and curriculum to achieve your career goals. Growing up in rural Malaysia, I recall memories of my mother's late-night drives to seek medical assistance for my bronchitis due to the scarcity of hospitals and doctors' offices in our area. This experience fueled my passion for family medicine and my determination to ensure equitable healthcare for all communities. By applying to WMed, I hope to gain the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to address the healthcare disparities faced by so many. With WMed's one-week intervals, I will have the chance to further explore my interest in family medicine through electives such as FMED 9210 and FMED 9220. Volunteering at the PICU taught me the value of connecting with individuals like "Jen," an asthma patient who inspired me with her dreams of becoming an artist. Despite her medical challenges, Jen's unwavering spirit and talent for painting inspired me. Through her artwork, she found solace and expressed herself. By the end of my time at the PICU, I had formed a genuine connection with Jen and several other patients. WMed's mission of providing patient and family-centered care aligns with my commitment to establishing meaningful doctor-patient relationships. WMed's strong emphasis on student research also resonates with my desire to integrate research into my medical education. Having worked in laboratories at Vanderbilt and the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center, I am eager to continue bridging the gap between basic science and clinical practice. Presenting at the KUH Undergraduate Research Symposium at Harvard further sparked my excitement to delve deeper into scientific inquiry and explore cutting-edge concepts. WMed's Pilot Research Project Support Program will provide invaluable resources and mentorship to enrich my research experience. As an institution grounded on health equity, WMed offers the education, experiences, and opportunities to become the physician I aspire to be – one who positively impacts patients' lives and contributes significantly to medicine. 2. Describe how you add to the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the medical profession and what you bring to the practice of medicine - your values and life experiences. (2000 characters) I experienced the harsh realities of racism and colorism while growing up in Malaysia . I vividly remember the disappointment of being excluded from the school soccer team due to ethnic quotas and enduring discrimination because of my darker skin tone. To fit in, I resorted to using skin whitening products, subjecting my skin to harmful chemicals.
These experiences ingrained in me a deeper understanding of the injustices and biases that persist in society. I realized that despite my notable academic and athletic achievements, an intangible barrier seemed to hinder me from reaching my full potential solely due to my skin color. Moving to the US at 16 intensified my feelings of alienation, being the outsider in a school where I did not blend in. Fortunately, a compassionate classmate pushed me beyond my comfort zone, igniting a transformative friendship. Remembering these experiences, I wholeheartedly embraced college as I tried out for the soccer team, ultimately becoming a starter and team captain in my senior year. As captain, I had the privilege of fostering inclusion and supporting the growth of my teammates. Through mentoring and advocacy, I witnessed the profound impact of effective leadership on individual and group development. My immigrant journey taught me the power of small acts of kindness and compassion and their impact on someone struggling in an unfamiliar environment. Transitioning from Malaysia to the US to build a new life has given me a unique perspective that I am eager to bring to the practice of medicine. I can enrich discussions and foster a greater understanding of different perspectives, contributing to a more inclusive environment. Furthermore, the adversities I have faced along the way have fueled my desire to cultivate an inclusive and compassionate healthcare system; one that addresses the unique struggles faced by individuals from marginalized backgrounds, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their needs are met. 3. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world in an unprecedented way. If COVID-19 impacted you, your academic plan, or your planned experiences, and you haven't noted elsewhere, please tell us about your unique circumstances. (2000 characters) The Covid-19 outbreak abruptly disrupted my graduation plans and left me feeling uncertain about the future. The sudden campus evacuation forced me to find alternative accommodations, and since my family was residing in Malaysia, I found myself homeless. Some nights, I resorted to sleeping in my car, surrounded by all my belongings. I reached out to local organizations, shelters, and my network of friends for temporary accommodations. Fortunately, I received assistance from caring friends and their families, who provided me with shelter and kindness. Focused on finding solutions and regaining control, I utilized campus and counseling services to access helpful resources and guidance. I planned to return to the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center for my gap year, but similar evacuations at the University of Kentucky thwarted my plan to continue doing research.
