Unit 5 Text Questions
1.
What are conventional, alternative, and complementary medicine? How do they differ?
Both terms refer to treatments, like herbs or acupuncture, that are out of the medical mainstream. But
complementary medicine is when these therapies are used along with traditional Western medicine.
Alternative medicine is when these approaches are used instead of traditional medicine.
2.
What is preventative medicine? What is an example of preventative medicine?
3.
What are the different dimensions of health? Describe each dimension.
There are five dimensions of health: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social. These five
dimensions of health provide a full picture of health as a change in any dimension affects others. Physical
health can refer to a person's physical activity level, diet, nutrition, sleep cycle, and level of consumption
of alcohol or drugs. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects
how we think, feel, and act. Emotional health is one aspect of mental health. It is your ability to cope
with both positive and negative emotions. Spiritual health includes a purposeful life, transcendence and
actualization of different dimensions and capacities of human beings. Social health is the ability of
individuals to form healthy and rewarding interpersonal relationships with others.
4.
What are immunizations?
Immunization is the process by which an individual's immune system becomes fortified against an
infectious agent.
5.
Describe two alternative medical systems.
Ayurveda is an alternative medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. The theory
and practice of Ayurveda is pseudoscientific. Chiropractic is a pseudoscientific alternative medicine that
is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system,
especially the spine.
6.
Many alternative and complementary medicine practices are viewed with skepticism within
traditional/mainstream medicine. Why is this the case? What are the advantages and
disadvantages to this skepticism?
People become skeptical due to the overflowing abundance of scientific evidence that backs more proof
with certain treatments. It makes people more comfortable overall if it is more tested. It would help
prove theories if people were more skeptical, since they didn't think it would work previously.
7.
Why is preventative medicine an important aspect of the healthcare system?
This is an important field of medicine that not only helps patients and populations thwart illness, but
also helps keep health costs down.
8.
Should the healthcare system in your country incorporate a more holistic approach with
emphasis on all dimensions of health? Why or why not?
A holistic approach to health is essential to address the leading cause of the problem rather than just the
symptoms. It takes everything into account and encourages people to take charge of their health and
well-being. It is also essential to prevent illnesses and find long term solutions for existing illnesses.
9.
What are the benefits of preventative practices such as health check-ups and screenings?
The benefits of regular check-ups include reducing your risk of getting sick, detect potentially life-
threatening health conditions or diseases early, increase chances for treatment and cure, limit risk of
complications by closely monitoring existing conditions, and increase lifespan and improve health.
10.
Why do some individuals choose to use alternative and complementary practices?
People seek out these alternatives because (1) they are dissatisfied in some way with conventional
treatment; (2) they see alternative treatments as offering more personal autonomy and control over
health care decisions; and (3) the alternatives are seen as more compatible with the patients' values or
worldview.
