The Language of Medicine. Elsevier. A stroke happens when there is a blockage in the blood supply of a part of the brain or a rupture of an artery. The consequence part of the brain gets damaged. A stroke is also called a brain attack, there are two types of strokes. An ischemic stroke is when the blood is blocked creating a clot. Hemorrhagic is when an artery ruptures or breaks within the brain leaking blood. (Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). The brain controls body functions (i.e. Chabner, 2020). Every lobe of the brain has a function. The lobes are frontal, occipital, parietal, and temporal. In the frontal lobe, we have our behavior, personality, and emotions. The occipital is our vision, the parietal body sensations, and special perception. The temporal hearing, language, and speech. The movement is also found on the frontal right next to the parietal. That is why when an individual has a stroke, they tend to lose some of their abilities. Some of the symptoms included sudden numbness, confusion, double vision, issues walking, and severe headaches. There are some factors that increase the chances of having a stroke including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. In addition, excessive tobacco, and alcohol usage and eating a diet
high in saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol (Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). People with a hereditary of family history also have a higher risk. Genetic disorders can cause a stroke like sickle cell disease. My mom used to smoke, and she had high blood pressure, years ago she stopped smoking. I am glad she did because it is said stroke is more common in women than male. One shocking fact is that the chance of having a stroke doubles every 10 years after age 55. (Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov, 2023). Stroke is more common in older adults. Having high blood pressure and obesity in my family makes me more cautious. I tried to exercise to prevent obesity. My dad is obese, and this has been one of the things that motivates me to keep a healthy diet and stay active. Word count: 349 Chabner, D.-E. (2020). The Language of Medicine. Elsevier. Stroke Facts | Cdc.gov. (2023, September 6). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. http://www.cdc.gov/stroke/facts.htm Response # 1 Doctor Martinez A stroke requires emergency care. The healthcare provider may give an anticoagulant or blood-thinning to the patient, one common blood thinner is aspirin or clopidogrel. As far as medication a medicine called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is used intravenously to break up the blood clots that block blood flow in the brain. It is said that tPA must be given within 4.5 hours after stroke symptoms. (Treatment | NHLBI, NIH, 2023). Procedures such as thrombectomy which remove a blood clot from a blood vessel. The advantage is that it reduces the damage to the brain and loss of body function when removing the blood clot. The term "angioplasty" means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery. Angioplasty procedures are done by inserting a short wire mesh tube, which is a stent, into the artery during the procedure. The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more freely. (Website, 2022). When I work in an MRI facility, patients with stents can get an MRI after approximately eight weeks after a stent is placed. References: Treatment | NHLBI, NIH. (2023, May 26).
