Lorena Anderson CJ-340, Module 2 Assignment Criminology The crime I have chosen is dog fighting. This offense has three different crime types that an offender can commit. According to NIBRS (The National Incident- Based Reporting System), dog fighting is defined as animal cruelty, which is intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly taking an action that mistreats or kills any animal without just cause, such as torturing, tormenting, mutilating, maiming, poisoning, or abandonment (NIBRS, 2016). There are 3 types of crime that an offender can commit that is considered animal cruelty1) simple/ gross neglect. 2) organized abuse (dog fighting).3) Intentional abuse and torture. An offender that participates in dog fights most likely has disconnect from their emotions possibly due to something that has happened to them in the past or is currently affecting them mentally. This type of person does not see the dog as an animal but as a tool to use for sport, monetary gain, and entertainment. Dog fighting is seen as a type of cultural deviance theories for example “cultural deviance theorists argue that our society is made up of various groups and subgroups, each with its own standards of right and wrong. Behavior considered normal in one group may be considered “deviant” by another. As a result, those who conform to the standards of cultures considered deviant are behaving in accordance with their own norms but may be breaking the law-the norms of the dominant culture.” References: https://ucr.fbi.gov/nibrs/2018/resource-pages/nibrs_offense_definitions- 2018.pdf Adler, F.
