THEO104- WEEK 4 Discussion Thread- The Sacred/Secular Divide
The divide between sacred and secular aspects of life is a common issue in contemporary society.
This divide affects the way religion is perceived in the public sphere, making it difficult for Christians to engage with the culture they live in. When religion is pushed to the sidelines of public discourse, Christians may feel like they must separate their beliefs from their professional and social lives, which limits their ability to contribute to society.
In my own life, I have noticed how this divide can affect me. For instance, I sometimes struggle to reconcile my personal values with the priorities I face in my professional life. To bridge this gap, I have to make a conscious effort to integrate my faith into every aspect of my life. This conscious effort reminds me of what the Prophet Micah said tells the people of Israel what the Lord requires from us in the Old Testament. He said, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly
with your God.”
(New International Version Bible, 2011, Micah 6:8). I am also reminded of what
the Apostle Paul tells the church of Colossians in the New Testament as he reminds them that “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
(English Standard Version Bible, 2016, Colossians 2:23-24).
To eliminate the sacred/secular divide, we need to take a holistic approach. This means advocating for the recognition of religious perspectives in public discussions and creating environments where faith is respected and welcomed. We can promote open dialogue, encourage inclusivity, and set an example by living out our faith every day. By engaging in cultural
conversations with authenticity and conviction, we can break down barriers and create a more interconnected and understanding society.
