Britney Logan WK 2 Summative Assessment Respond to the following investigation prompts in 75-150 words each: Identify an ethical dilemma you may encounter in the workplace. (Your answer to this item does not need to be 75-150 words.) An ethical dilemma that I encountered in the workplace came from my supervisor who was an extremely toxic person. She was unfair to everyone but mostly to the older people who worked in my department. Describe how you would use an ethical problem-solving methodology or decision model to investigate your current ethical dilemma. I would first need to figure out what the problem is and what is causing me to feel uncomfortable. I would then need to see it from every angle and check my facts. I would need to identify the people who I feel are being discriminated against. Make a list of options with a variety of decisions and solutions. I would test my options for example does this cause less harm than the alternative. Once I have went over my guide, I would decide. Describe the possible solutions and impacts of making decisions about this dilemma. Since this dilemma involves other people, I would need to make sure that the party that is affected by my supervisor’s behavior is aware of my concerns. Even though I don’t have to say anything to them about it since my supervisor’s actions are making me uncomfortable as well. Some people may not agree with the actions I want to take, but her behavior is making the workplace feel uncomfortable for a lot of people not just me. Explain what impact your values may have on your decision. I’ve always believed that people should be treated equal, discrimination or favoritism is not ok especially in the workplace. I’m an African American woman who has experienced some sort of discrimination a few times in my life and it’s an awful thing to experience. No one should be treated poorly because of something they never had control of. My supervisor would load the older people in my depart with an outrages amount of work, more than the average person got, then be little them in front of everyone because they didn’t finish on time. Explain what impact 2 specific ethical theories may have on your decision for the dilemma. The two ethical theories that may have an impact on my decision for this dilemma is Utilitarianism and Kantianism. I chose these ethical theories because I feel as though that favor each other in some way. The theory of utilitarianism basically stated the right thing to do in a satiation will do the “most good.” (CEBE Ethical Theory Overview) In my dilemma all I want is to have the best outcome where the “most good” is done. :actions are right in proportion as they tent to promote happiness” (bibliu). Kantianism states that out of respect, there are rules that need to be followed for example respect people’s privacy and rights. Explain what impact 2 specific ethical principles may have on your decision. The two ethical theories that may have an impact on my decision for this dilemma is justice and beneficence. The turnaround for this department was high, no one stayed after their probation period because of her treatment to her staff. If there is no justice, she will continue to treat others however she feels. I chose beneficence because I deeply feel that people should do what is right and good. Treat others how you would want to be treated. Explain how you could use this formal ethical problem-solving method to have a positive impact on future ethical decisions in the workplace. My experience in the workplace shows that sometimes no matter what, someone will always disagree or dislike the decisions that you make. Following the ethical problem-solving method would guide me in making positive decisions and hopefully create a healthy work environment. It’s also helpful to see the problem from every angle that way you’re not making decisions based on your emotions. Cite at least two reputable references according to APA guidelines.
