1 2-1 Short Paper:Ethics Felissa M.Riley Southern New Hampshire University HIM 510 Applications and Systems Professor Shawnty Bell December 17,2023
2 Hello, my name is Felissa Riley, and I am so glad to be a part of Mercy Vale Medical Center HIM professionals.I hope that I can help bring unity and cohesiveness under my leadership with this dedicated team of professionals that are striving every day to uphold the missions and values of this great facility. There are some things that I want to address and expand on as we go forward as a team. The simple definition of ethics is concerned with what's morally good and bad and morally right and wrong (Singer, 2023).Which does involve questions, decision making, values and standards (Singer, 2023).AHIMA’s The Code of Ethics addresses provisions for HIM professionals to maintain the privacy, security, disclosure, development, use, maintenance, reachable, and honesty of health information (AHIMA Code of Ethics, n.d.). AHIMA’s code of Ethics, purpose for HIM professionals is the promotion of high standards, summarization of ethical principles, the establishment of ethical principles, framework for decision making, core values, behavior, responsibilities in regard to conflict and uncertainties ,and principles by which the public can hold HIM professionals accountable and provide guidance to new practitioners in the field (AHIMA Code of Ethics, n.d.).The top five Mercy Vale Medical Center ethical and business values, principles, and guidelines are issues that we must address and they will be with your input and help.Issues such as patient safety, regulatory violations and financial struggles require a team effort, no one person can accomplish fixing these problems alone.Areas of agreement and areas of divergence in comparing AHIMA’s Code of Ethics and business ethics is that policies, procedures, and protocols are followed.Budgeting and reimbursement are a must, any business needs profit but when it comes to patients their care is of the utmost importance. HIM professionals can integrate ethical leadership into daily practice through honesty, respect, demonstrating justice and integrity, and building community. HIM professional must
3 lead by example, showing publicly the importance of ethics, making decisions based on the organization's mission and values, being aware of the values, establishment of zero tolerance for ethical violations and showing fairness and respect to others (How To Improve Ethical Leadership Skills (With Examples), 2023).HIM leaders can cultivate a culture of diversity and cultural competence in several ways.Promoting respectful communication through training, coaching, and behavioral modeling is one approach.Second, encourage collaboration by providing opportunities to create meaningful teamwork and encourage inclusive dialogue (Chen & Guide, 2023).Third, manage unconscious bias while fostering a culture of acceptance through training, open discussions, diversity hiring, and inclusive behaviors.Lastly, establishment of supportive networks that connect people with similar interests, providing resources for employees who are new to their organization and celebration of people's success through recognition and rewards (Chen & Guide, 2023). The appropriate tone to address staff and colleagues in a healthcare setting should start from the mission, values, and goals of the organization. This event will be a reminder of the organization including everyone and their importance to the organization. The communication should be clear, concise and the tone of voice must be watched carefully. Also when addressing staff and colleagues you need to be prepared, mindful of nonverbal communication,be an active listener and promote a positive culture with having your own emotional intelligence so that you may engage easily with the staff and colleagues.I want to thank all of you for taking the time out of your busy day to read this memo and feel free to ask questions and provide suggestions.
