Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth. To be ethical about one's personal, academic, and professional growth is to do the right thing as it pertains to your values and beliefs. For me honesty and integrity are extremely important. Everyone should be treated fairly and practice measures to avoid taking advantage of others. Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved. An ethical dilemma that I encountered a few years ago was when my husband and I were checking out at the grocery store. Just to set the scene, it was a busy day at the grocery store and lines were long at every register. We had several items that we knew would total over a few hundred dollars. The cashier scanned the code from my phone to use my Walmart pay, and the register cleared its screen as if the transaction were complete. I told the cashier that I have not received my electronic receipt or a text from my bank indicating that a transaction has been made, and she told me that the transaction went through, and we were good to go. Others might look at this as a scenario where I pointed out the issue to the cashier and she did not catch the error and I was able to keep my money, but ethically, I was not leaving until I saw a receipt come through. I kept checking my account while my husband was loading the groceries into the car. I just had a gut feeling that the transaction did not process. After returning to the store with our full cart of groceries, my husband and I went to customer service to explain the situation. It was determined that there had been a mistake and the transaction had failed. It turned out that the cashier was just out of training and unfortunately did not notice the error when she pulled up the transaction. My groceries were rescanned and this time the transaction worked because I immediately received my digital receipt and a text indicating that a transaction was debited. Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values. My general education courses have influenced my ethical values by reminding me to be open- minded when it comes to all cultural beliefs. Everyone should be empathetic, respectful, and cooperative. You want to ensure you are not offending someone's stance or culture.
