Learning Response week 4
Prompt 1: Choose one learning objective outlined at the beginning of this
lesson and briefly describe how the lesson material fulfilled it.
The learning objective
“How can popular culture activities look like and act like
religion?” is thoroughly explained throughout the lesson material as us the readers
are made aware about the connection sports and religion share. Sports is the
biggest popular culture activity around the world as sports are universal. Throughout
our society, whether it be here in the West or across the globe, sports unites
communities. Similarly religion does the same thing, it unites communities. In the
lesson “Sports Can Function Like Religion,” it is said that Emile Durkehim, a french
sociologist, founded his theory of religion on the notion that a community's religious
shared values (Lesson 4, “Sports Can Function Like Religion”). We also see in
Lesson 4 how David Chidester describes baseball by saying that it “operates in
American culture like a church” (Lesson 4, “The Church of Baseball”). The learning
objective is outlined throughout the lesson through examples of different sports being
treated like religion such as Baseball and by providing connections that sports and
religion share with one another such as binding communities.

the US, Price looks at how religious imagery, rituals, and demonstrations of faith
have evolved into essential components of sporting events.
