One of the greatest benefits of being in a leadership position is that I have been able to see situations where people made informed decisions that allowed for backup and inputs from those around them, and other situations where decisions were made in a vacuum and the consequences of that decisions were not thought about or discussed. Serving in the military as an officer has allowed me to be the person making decisions. When making those decisions, it is paramount that I work with my division and unit to ensure we all have a say or input about what is going to happen. Previous commands I have served at did not allow for open communication and informed decision making. The leader or decision maker sets the tone for the environment and determines how much input they take from their team. As Martin Moore writes, "The only surefire way to evaluate the efficacy of a decision is to assess the outcomes" (Moore, 2022). Having an open and inviting environment allows for the truth to be heard because the leader is someone who facilitates a good discussion and works to take everyone's information into consideration, even if they disagree. When forming my own environment and how I operate, my faith and Christian mindset, plays a large role in ensuring that I root my decision making in something strong. When thinking about ethics playing into decision making, a strong ethical decision-making process will ultimately lead to a better environment where people are heard. "Ethics has to do with our choices and actions, which form our character even as they express it. Ethics depends on that human habit of reflection that takes into account our interests and values-as well as those of others-in the process of deciding and doing" (Fitzgerald, 2014). Being raised in a Chrisitan home, ethics were center to our daily life and that has helped me when forming a welcoming and open environment. When ethics are present, it allows for people to do things because it is the right thing to do and keeps people honest. One of the worst things as a leader is to have people be afraid to tell the truth out of the feat of repercussions. Continuing to show how the Bible points towards an open and welcoming environment, Proverbs states, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (RSVCE, 1965, Prov 3: 5-6). Fitzgerald, P. (2014). Religion and ethical decision making .
