Option 3: Articulate your thoughts about how creation, the fall, and redemption have influenced the relational functioning of a married couple.
How the relational functioning of married couples according to the
creation plan of God has been influenced
by
the fall of man and the redemption plan of God
Almighty God being the creator of all things, saw it fit to incorporate in
his creation plan the ordinance of the relationship between a man and a woman in marriage for various purposes including, the productivity and multiplication of human beings, human habitation expansion on Earth and for
humanity to rule over everything in it (
The New International Version
, Genesis 1:26-28, 1973/2011). In the twenty-sixth and twenty-eighth verses of the first chapter of the book of Genesis, God plans and executes his plan to create humanity in his own image and the interesting element in this is that God´s image is not bound by sex or gender because out of his image, he
created both male and female (
The New International Version
, Genesis 1:26-
28, 1973/2011). What possible meaning does this revelation present?
The indication of the origin of the roles of a man and a woman in marriage surfaces through these verses, although not clearly stated, one can
be certain that the roles of the creation exist for as long as the creator has created the creation (Verdianto, 2022). It follows that the roles of a husband and a wife were a part of God´s original creation plan, nevertheless, how come there is great debate around the subject of roles in a marital relationship? Perhaps the reason for the ambiguity in the role of the husband
and wife can be explained through the happening of the fall of man, hence the emergence of God´s redemption plan (Verdianto, 2022). Although subject to the curse of sin, God´s redemption plan is founded on his creation plan, it does not replace it just as Christ Jesus does not replace the law but fulfils it (Klein & Klein, 2020).
According to the order of creation, marriage is an institution ordained by God to last forever. In the book of Genesis, the second chapter and verses
sixteen through twenty-five, the Bible begins to be explicit about the roles of the man and the woman whereby, the man was to work and care for the garden, and clearly, the man was not only skilled for the work, he was also knowledgeable because he successfully named living creatures (
The New International Version
, Genesis 2:16-25, 1973/2011). The woman´s role was to assist the man in life forever. If marriage was meant to last forever, why did Jesus say that when all people are finally raised from the dead through the power of God they will not have husbands or wives, they will be like the angels in heaven (
The New International Version
, Matthew 22:30, 1973/2011)? This came as a result of the redemption plan because man fell
by disobeying God. Humans fell because they became sinful by corrupting the creation plan of God. From thereon, dominion was lost and even the order of marriage was distorted. In the nineteenth chapter of the book of Matthew, the eighth verse, Jesus said “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.” (
The New International Version
, 1973/2011). From the last two scriptures, it is evident that, through the creation plan, neither death nor divorce would ever end marriage had man not become sinful. Incidentally, the redemption plan makes provision for grace on account of digression and deviation by man from the creation plan (Gafford-Williamson, A. B., 2021). Through faith in Christ Jesus, we receive salvation from the effects of the fall and enter into the effects of the redemption plan (
The New International Version
, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1973/2011). As mentioned before the roles or functions of a husband and a wife in marriage have been affected firstly in the sense that, because of sin, humans have lost the fear of God and have opened themselves to alternative marital lifestyles that do not align with the creation plan (Emrich, 2022). For example, in some couples or families, the wife, instead of the man, is the head of the home when the Bible attributes that function to the man (
The New International Version
, Ephesians 5:22-24, 1 Corinthians 11:3, 1 Timothy 3:4, 1973/2011). Other alternatives include another person of the same sex being the head of a family in the case of same-sex marriages. Some families allow a pastor, a spouse´s parent, a superior from work or even a friend to be the head of their family. Secondly, those who have come to understand and wholeheartedly receive the effects of the redemption plan as it relates to marriage, also have the benefit of learning and applying a set of skills that shadow the essence of the redemption plan holistically. For example, the application and reception of forgiveness, compassion, mercy, and grace toward and from a wife or a husband illustrate the forgiveness, compassion, mercy, and grace that God applies toward us and how we receive those elements of love (
The New International Version
, Ephesians 5:23-25, 1 Peter 3:7, 1973/2011; Emrich, 2022; Gafford-Williamson, 2021). Furthermore, the Bible explains how the church, being the body of Christ is also the bride of Christ (
The New International Version
, Revelation 19:7-9, 1973/2011). Again, one can see the context and the application of marital principles in the relationship between Christ and the church which means that God in his redemption plan, did not discard marriage (Gafford-Williamson, 2021). Instead, he reinforced it according to the creation plan – the church will be married to Christ Jesus forever.
Conclusively, despite the fall of man, the creation plan of God concerning the ordinance of marriage, and everything else, still prevails through the redemption plan of God (Klein & Klein, 2020). Everything in the creation plan for marriage originates through his own image as mentioned above – “so God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them” (
