Chapter 1: The role of ethics in health care Ethics can refer to various members of a family of related concepts. Among the various concepts of ethics are: 1. _ A set of rules or principles for human behavior, as, for example, the Ten Commandments. 2. _A field of scholarly inquiry within philosophy, theology, and other disciplines, including various methods and theories. 3. _The state of a person’s character. 4. _A feature of human choice and action. We live in a diverse and multicultural society, and there are many sources for moral guidance. [Reflection] What are your own sources for moral guidance in your own life? Why is diversity and pluralism in terms of these sources a problem? Sources for moral guidance in my own life come from both my religion and my parents from the way they raised me. Diversity and pluralism in terms of these sources is a problem because everyone was raised differently and have opposing opinions where they believe a certain path is right or wrong which is when conflicts occur. The problem of moral difference and disagreement is serious, but there may be ways to overcome it in some cases. In your own words, describe the five potential avenues for the resolution of moral conflicts. 1. _Rational argument where both sides are heard and given the chance to defend themselves while also being open to listening to the other. 2. _Moral Persuasion by using factors or ideas that the other party is for to benefit yourself and turn them to the opposing side. 3. _Negotiation and Compromise where both parties are able to agree on a certain course of action that either benefits both parties or neither. 4. _Coercion a way to persuade a party to act a certain way in a forceful manner. 5. _Agreeing to disagree where there is no more arguing however there is no solution which affects both parties poorly. [Reflection] Out of the five options above, are there any that you utilize in your own lives? Are there any not listed that you use to solve moral disagreements? In my own life I use rational arguments specifically with my parents when I am trying to gain their permission for something. I also solve moral disagreements sometimes with taking time to reflect.
Health care serves a wide variety of recognized and related purposes . What are some of them? 1. _Prevention and treatment of illness and injury 2. _The relief of pain and suffering 3. _The preservation and restoration of physical and mental function Health care also “happens” in a variety of places . What are some of them? 1. _Physician office visits 2. _Emergency Department 3. _Ongoing care What’s one possible reason for the intensity of ethical debates in health care and its sustained attention over the years? One possible reason for the intensity of ethical debates in health care and its sustained attention over the years is the significance of the values and interests’ health care serves, Despite the importance of the human values at stake in health care, we would not need to pay much attention to ethical issues if it weren’t for what ? If most or all of our health care choices and their likely consequences were clear, and the best choices were obvious. Public officials and health care facility executives frequently confront moral and policy decisions that are ____. Complex or difficult. Ultimately, what is this book designed to enable readers to do? To understand why the issues and cases are challenging to engage in careful moral reasoning and deliberation about them, and to formulate and defend their own conclusions.
