HIT 142
February 20, 2023 Assignment #2
The ethical issues I would consider in this situation would be veracity, beneficence, and autonomy. The first ethical issue of veracity is defined as habitual truthfulness and honesty; these values help when a situation affects many people. In this case, the EHR system will be used by everyone in the workplace. If the EHR system is not compliant with federal privacy and security standards then, it will affect every user entering information. Therefore, health information professionals need to be honest about what they think of the EHR system they will be using day-
to-day and report the issue to their appropriate manager.
The second ethical issue considered would be beneficence, which is defined as qualities of kindness, mercy, and charity. Beneficence is an important ethical issue because health-care workers are expected to be kind and do their best for every patient, as said multiple ways in the Hippocratic Oath. In this case, the EHR system is meant to improve health information for patients and improve work productivity for health-care workers to better help patients. HIT 142
February 20, 2023 model, encouraging ethical behavioral, and monitoring employee conduct. If my staff communicates a problem in the workplace, my job is to find a resolution to that problem. How I handle the problem is viewed by my staff, thus the importance to think before action is taken. The research into finding another EHR system that is compliant with all standards starts with a cost-benefit analysis. Staff members and myself will need to go through all possible options for EHR systems that we can use, and find the option that best benefits the workplace. The cost of the system is usually viewed as the best logical choice and if the system functions is next to best choice as well. As the decision maker, I need to answer questions for ethical decision making. Such as, the question of which option makes the most sense? And the question can you justify it as sensible to others whom you admire and respect? Also, the question will the chosen option stand up to media scrutiny? It is not an easy decision to make when it will affect your staff and patients, but it is my responsibility to choose the best option for an EHR system.
