Report
Keondra Kalpen 12/23/2023 CJ-675-Q2071 Data Driven Decisions in CJ 2-2 Short Paper: Crime Trends The article provided is a public report that takes place in Fargo, North Dakota. The report reveals that there has been an increase in crimes of a certain type in the past years and those crimes include arson, burglary, and aggravated assault and is up by as much as 58%. Then you have crimes such as gross sexual imposition, homicides, and robbery decreasing in that area. The police department faces the issue of being under the average national when it comes to officers per capita. With that being said, the police department has recognized the issues of the current increase in the number of crimes such as burglary and theft happening in the area and are attempting to work towards lowering the crime rate. But they face the issue of budget constraints that are putting a limit on being able to hire more officers to handle this fluctuation of crime in the area. Taking into account the major factors that contribute to such a prominent crime trend within the Fargo Police Department’s jurisdiction, I can say that the increase in crime has been influenced by more people beginning to live and move to the city as well as stated in the article by the police department, an increase in drug related issues as well as mental health issues. When it comes to what research method, I would employ to work towards finding a solution to alleviate the problem which is the increase in crime in Fargo, I would have to say that I would use a type of comprehensive research method that combines both a quantitative and a
qualitative approach. I say this because I believe it would work better in this sense to get a greater solution to the issue to resolve it. From the quantitative research perspective, I would do a statical analysis of the data of the crimes that have been collected over the past few years. It would help with providing an insight into the crime trend that is happening as well as looking deeper into patterns and other correlations that are contributing to this problem. It would help me to better understand and identify certain areas and demographics as well as times associated with those particular crimes. Going with the qualitative research method perspective, I would conduct interviews as well as surveys with people a part of the community effected by this increase in crime as they could provide a better understanding of some of the underlying issues socially, culturally, as well as economically that are factoring into this increase in crime. This particular method could help with pinpointing the exact issues influencing the crime rate and being able to address them accordingly. When it comes down to making a decision on how to reduce the impact of crime in the surrounding community, utilizing the information from the article/report, I can say that it would take the community and police department as well as leaders in the community to devise a plan to address the issues that factor into this problem which are again the people that are moving into the area, drug abuse, and mental health issues. Utilizing resources such as rehabilitation and mental health programs would impact these issues. As well as having the community engage more and coming together to address the increase in crime. Which ultimately is a social issue. I believe addressing those problems would put them on the path of decreasing the rate of those crimes being committed. Resources:
