Personal Philosophy of School Counseling Student Core Beliefs
I believe that every student can “learn, and every student can succeed” (ASCA, 2019). I also believe every student should be given the opportunity to grow through learning new information and can be successful socially, academically, and mentally. By helping students through crisis or social-
emotional struggles, students will be given the ability to know how they best learn, understand boundaries, and have tools to use in relationship conflict situations. School Counselor Role and Advocate Overall, I believe school counselors' role to advocate for students is to make
sure they are in a safe environment, have an equal learning opportunity, and their necessities are being covered. Advocacy as a school counselor is being able to take data from students and implement the best program strategy plan that will benefit students growth academically, socially, or mentally (ASCA, 2019). It is important to know that “School counselors facilitate counseling and educational services for students with the aim of promoting personal/social, academic, and career development” (Mullen, 2016). Ethical Standards and School Counselors
The ASCA ethical standards for school counseling guide the profession by being the principles that “guide school counselors' decision making and help standardize professional practice to protect both students and school counselors” (ASCA, 2019). Without ethical standards, there would be no direction or obligations for school counselors to follow. Ethical standards for school counselors help cultivate growth in the implementation steps and tools used by the counselor. Overall, ethics stands for school counseling are important because they are the rules that protect the student, counselors, and school by defining the responsibilities, establishing appropriate methods of practice, and having a guideline to measure growth (ASCA, 2019). Vision Statement I want to empower students with the tools they need to be successful academically, emotionally, and socially, as well as helping them through any
crisis needs.
