Do not just reword the definition for me. Chapter 1: Argumentation vs. Argument: The cooperative activity of developing and advancing arguments and of responding to the arguments of others. Vs. A claim advanced with a reason or reasons in its support. Debate: the exchange of arguments on a topic Assignment Content Controversy: prolonged argumentation at the societal level spanning space and time Why we study argumentation-3 skills: The first learning skill is the empowering skill because you cultivate the tools to find and use your voice. The second skill is productive insofar as the skills help individuals and communities make better decisions and achieve their goals. The third and final skill is the democratic skill by helping you meet your responsibility to public life. Critical Thinking: is active, present, and careful consideration of arguments Audiences and Co-arguers: we mean the people who want to agree with our arguments. Or the people to whom arguers speak and from whom arguers seek assent. Vs. are those with whom we debate or exchange arguments. Or the people with whom arguers exchange arguments. Presumption: A forced assumption. It serves as a tiebreaker, establishes a beginning point and who has the burden of proof The burden of proof: Establishes who has the duty to prove. Usually goes to person opposite of presumption. 3 spheres of argument: Personal- a realm Characterized by informal argumentation of limited scope among individuals. a. Private setting b. Two or more people, usually known to one another c. Participants determine standards of argumentation d. Conversation Public- A realm characterized by community-oriented argumentation of societal scope a. Many people b. strangers (general public) c. Medial
d. Common concerns e. Accessible to policymakers Flexible standards of argument and reasonableness Technical- a realm characterized by formal argumentation within a specialized community. a.
