M4.4 SUPERHERO ETHICS LEAGUE: MILESTONE 1 2 Introduction Oftentimes superheroes are held to a higher standard because they maintain powers and skills that are not ambiguous to the world population. Popularized in Marvel’s Spider-Man comic, created by Stan Lee, “With great power, comes great responsibility,” is an adage that sums up the moral code of conduct that superheroes are expected to maintain. Despite their efforts to be on the right side of the line when it comes to morals and ethics, superheroes face many dilemmas. For example, people wonder whether Batman should kill Joker or not, if Ironman’s technology should be regulated, or if anyone of the superheroes who walks around masking their identity when in costume, should come out and expose themselves to the world. The ideas are endless when it comes to the ethical dilemmas that are faced in the superhero world. Highlighted in one of the most watched tv shows on the CW network, The Flash, the audience is introduced to a dilemma that is prevalent in the Marvel world: Should mutants, both superheroes and villains, be obligated to take a cure?
M4.4 SUPERHERO ETHICS LEAGUE: MILESTONE 1 3 M4.4 Superhero Ethics League: Milestone 1 Mutants, cures, superheroes, and villains, all whom which have been grouped together and debated by Marvel fanatics for years. Should mutants be forced to take a cure? What does this do for the society if laws were set in place implementing these ideas? Let’s discuss it. Mutants, also known as metas in the CW series, the Flash, are described as super- humans, individuals who acquired powers and abilities unlike those of normal humans after experiencing mutation of their bodies. There are some mutants who intentionally mutated themselves for personal motives, and then there are mutants who were involuntarily forced to have their DNA changed, synonymous to that of Flash. Some grow to fight crime as heroes and others turn to violence, as they as labeled as villains. With the idea of permitted laws that obligate mutants to take a cure, that diminishes their powers, comes several ethical issues. As mentioned in the flash, mutants, or meta-humans as they are called, also have rights. When the particle accelerator exploded, those metas did not choose to become who they are, yet they did choose their actions with the powers that were bestowed upon them. The moral problem in this situation is that if permitted laws were to be made that forces mutants to take cures, it would violate the basic human rights of those forced to take it. There is one key ethical dilemma that is all too familiar, “MY BODY, MY CHOICE.” Forcing metas to take cures, not only eliminates the villains with superpowers, but also punishes superheroes, despite serving as protectors of the people. Like the debacle we faced in 2021 with the corona virus vaccines, many people chose not to take it, using the argument that it is their body, and that they should be able to choose what the do with their bodies. Another key issue that comes with forcing the mutants, especially superheroes, to take the cure, is that the police would
