Hi R,
I really enjoyed reading your discussion post this week. You did a great job of arguing
your point. I appreciate the research you put into your post and that you backed up each
argument with facts.
I also argued in my post that creators of violent media do not owe a duty of care for the
actions of individuals who consume their content. However, you bring up a point that did not
even cross my mind - the freedom of expression. Research has proven that the right to express
oneself freely is a necessary factor in one’s full development (Howie, 2017). That is, a person
cannot truly get to know themselves or even others when the freedom of expression is not
present.
As you have said, there are many factors that should be considered before concluding that
violent media consumption leads to violent actions. A study published in 2019 found that the
younger an individual is, the more susceptible to environmental stimuli their brain is (Mueller &
Tronick, 2019). This means that violent media may have a larger negative impact on young
people. However, media available to the public contains ratings to help the public determine
what is appropriate.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses a specific process to assign these
ratings. When a digital game is created, developers must complete a questionnaire from which a
rating is derived. Following the completion of this questionnaire, products are tested, ratings are
analyzed, and, if necessary, they are changed to reflect an accurate depiction of the media content
(

, 2019 With the help of these ratings, the consumer can exercise
their responsibility to choose content that is developmentally appropriate for them.
I appreciate your use of Romans 12:21. This verse demonstrates that although we, as
Christians, should not seek out any evil things, such things still exist in the world. It is up to us to
overcome evil things. 1 Corinthians 10:13 states, “No temptation has overtaken you except what
is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can
bear” (
New International Bible
, 1978/2011). This verse reminds us that while we have the
responsibility to make the best decisions for ourselves, we can surely do so when we have a
relationship with Jesus Christ.
