What has been your experience of whether science has been at odds with
faith or Christian faith? Explain.
I have also thought of science as a process to study and attempt to understand
the natural world. However, faith has been associated with more spiritual and
even supernatural. I believe that there is a lot of confusion and discussion of the
difference between science and faith. I was raised to believe that if you had faith
then science wouldn’t be as important. That God is the reason and cause for
everything in life. However, as an adult I have become comfortable with
questioning my faith. I have found that those answers I cannot find in my faith I
can usually find in science.
Based on the definitions of science (and scientism) explored in the chapter,
what has been your understanding of science and how it is viewed or used
in social work. Give an example if you can.
Technically social work is not considered a science. However, social work is
informed and controlled by social science. This is the science of humanity,
social interactions, and social structures. Social workers spend time researching
and using organizations and policy or procedures to assist patients. They work
to uncover the facts and truths about the social world. The
What moral and ethical implications are there for social work practice or
policy to exalting science too highly? Too lowly?
Ethically social workers should be aware of the use of science. Science is part of
the research or data collection that social workers depend on. Social workers
should be constantly expanding their skills and their abilities for helping their
patients. However, to do this a lot of the techniques and skills that are used
come from science. However, it is also important for social workers to be aware
of the patient as a person. Just because on method or idea works for one patient
does not mean it will work for others. Science allows a social worker to increase
and improve their abilities. Social workers must be able to identify a balance of
science and holistic approach.
Murray (2018), states, “Faith is a part of every worldview”, “And so the
question isn’t whether we have faith. The question is whether the one in
whom our faith is placed is worthy of it” (176). What do you make of these
statements? When considering them, what roles should science and faith
play in considering policy and leadership strategies? Explain.
I agree we all have faith. Even for those who do not have faith in God have
faith in something. Even if it is just that the sun will come up tomorrow. When
we work with addiction patients we tend to advise them that their " higher
power or faith" does not have to be God. However, it does need to be something
bigger than themselves. It needs to be something that helps you realize that the
patient is not the center of the universe. Science and faith have influence on
policy and leadership strategies. There needs to be a balance between the two
concepts in order for them to be productive.
