Ethics Assignment 2 Ethical Dilemma A medical facility has purchased an electronic health record (EHR) system, it has been some time and the facility staff are eager and pressuring to deploy this system as soon as possible by the chief information officer (CIO) and chief of the medical staff (CMS). However, during a testing period, it was shown that the EHR system does not comply with applicable federal privacy and security standards. However, the CIO and CMS disagree with postponing the HER system deployment . Unethical Decisions Launching a new HER system and knowingly have issues with privacy and security is a very unethical choice to make. Having prior knowledge of these issues and the ability and time to address the issues for the medical facility and the main person at risk- the patient. Afterall, it is their medical information that is being protected and monitored. How many patients would willingly see a medical professional of any level, knowing that the information that is obtained lacks privacy and security, my gut tells me none. At the time that the CIO and CMS were informed about the privacy and security issues, their attention did not turn to fix the issue, rather move on as planned and completely ignoring the huge elephant in the room of a problem. When running a successful and smooth medical facility, you do not need to worry about liability from medical records, not to mention it is even against the law. Patients have rights per the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information (PHI). Included in this protection is the right to only disclose his or her PHI without their consent.
