Professionalism, Ethics, and Leadership
Professionalism is behaving, speaking, and dressing according to the skill expected of an
individual. Ethics is built on the basis of morals and
can be explained as the correct behavior
used to handle a situation. Leadership is being a positive role model that influences and leads
others responsibly. As a professional one key area from the NASW code of ethics I want to work
on is competence. Focusing on educating myself and going more in depth to increase my
knowledge within the social work profession is something I do not do often. But, as a
professional, it is important to stay on track and up to date with resources and things going on in
today’s society. As a leader a key area I want to work on is understanding the importance of
human relationships.

I often do not speak up or try to build relationships. I instead isolate
myself, when I could be helping others connect to another.
Personal Values and Leadership Ideals
A personal value and leadership Ideal I possess that will be useful in the social work
profession is respect. Respecting yourself, colleagues, and clients will create a great work
environment where everyone feels comfortable. Respecting others can also allow you to build
trusting, influential relationships with your clients. Being empathetic is another leadership value
that is useful in the social work profession. It will help you to authentically connect with clients
and allow you to have a better understanding of where they are coming from.
Being empathetic can be useful but also could be in conflict with the social work
profession. It is okay to show empathy with regards to your clients, but sharing too much or going
into depth could be breaking the code of ethics. Manage these conflicts by being empathetic
