A prevalent concern with emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse is that a child or adult
may feel unsafe or unable to connect with others following the trauma and may feel vulnerable
with a counselor. In fact, a child may engage in several strategies of disconnection that create a
safe distance from their counselor. A relationally attuned counselor respects these strategies
and, in the words of relational-cultural theory, views them as strategies for survival. If you were
the counselor, how would you honor these strategies while also supporting movement and
connection in your relationship?
