Good evening,
Growing up, my parents had many friends who were diplomats. This was
particularly the case when we lived in Warsaw, Poland. I always found it
captivating when we were invited to the embassy or consulate. While I only
partially understood the diplomatic world at the time, I understood their mission
was to represent the interest of their country in the international system. When
the decision came to choose a major, it was a no-brainer that International
relations was it. Thus, I did both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in the
subject. I realized during my studies that I had developed an immense passion
for International and foreign affairs. Pursuing a Doctoral degree in public policy
with a foreign policy cognate was the straightforward stride. Now that I
understood the why, I wanted to know the how. I recently read an article in
Foreign Affairs magazine by Jake Sullivan that stated, “Nothing in world politics is
inevitable. U.S. foreign policy was developed in an era fast becoming a memory,
and the question now is whether the country can adjust to its main challenge:
competition in an age of interdependence”. These are the questions that I would
like to answer throughout my time as a Doctoral student and my dissertation
research. Serving in the military can bestow a solid groundwork of professional
knowledge and skills that can be leveraged for developing the subsidy on public
policy. My leadership skills while serving in the military can transform into the
ability to run policy proposals, oversee a team, and generate results with
conviction. My military training in making analytical and acute decisions on the
spot is instrumental in public policy, where educated choices are vital for
productive governance. Lastly, my educational background in international
relations allows me to approach public policy with an interdisciplinary lens,
research skills, and a global perspective. It gave me a balanced outlook on how
global subtleties interconnect with domestic policy decisions.
My Christian worldview goes hand in hand with my calling. I have always
believed God created humans and gave them a purpose or destiny. I do not
distinguish animals as less than humans because we are all God’s creation.
When I enlisted in the military, it became clear that I was a civil servant for life,
and I chose my profession partly because of how I perceived the world and how I
was brought up. We are God’s created, and therefore we ought to be protected.
Public Policy is a way of protecting both humans and the environment. As stated
in this week’s reading, “Public policy is made in the “public interest.” Hence my
understanding of public policy as a Christian is to ensure God’s creation is
represented in the international realm. 1 Chronicles 22:12, “and may the Lord
give you wisdom and understanding, that you may obey the law of the Lord your
God as you rule over Israel.”
