Hunter Mlady Chapter 13 Case Study 04/26/2022 1) Based on the definition and description of expatriation in this chapter, do you think Jessa has the background and the personal make-up to be successful as a self-initiated expatriate? Why or why not? Based on the description of Jessa’s background and her personal make-up, I do think she could be successful as a self-initiated expatriate. Jessa appears to be content on her own and on the road which would be cause for success on a journey like this one. 2) 2. Do you think Jessa is too “career focused?” Why or why not? Should she be more attuned to achieving greater balance in her life by increasing her involvement in nonwork interests and activities? I would agree with the notion that Jessa can be too “career focused.” She does not appear to struggle keeping relationships with her family members however, she is on the road quite a lot, far away from her loved ones as well and from the article, seems ok with that. I think she just needs to be more attuned to achieving greater balance in her life by increasing her involvement in non-work interests, activities, and relationships. 3) What family and personal life factors are influencing Jessa’s career decision-making? How big a role should her parents’ opinions play in her career decisions? At her age and level of experience, should they play a role at all? Personal factors that are influencing Jessa’s career decision-making process include her family and her lack of a social life. I believe her parents’ opinons should play a large rol in her career decision. Personally, family is what matters most in this life. I could not imagine moving even just a state away from my family let alone moving halfway across the globe away from them. It should play a major role in her decision. 4) If Jessa were to accept the position with the medical center in Doha, what potential cultural challenges, issues, or risks do you think she would encounter? Do you think these factors should give Jessa pause or hesitation in considering the offer? Why or why not? Challenges that Jessa will face if she does accept the position in Doha are the same challenges she is currently facing. They will just intensify. To elaborate, she will continue to have social limitations and she will continue to struggle maintaining relationships with her family. All of the problems she currently has will only worsen if she accepts the position in Doha. These factors should absolutely give Jessa pause when considering the offer that’s been presented to her.
Hunter Mlady Chapter 13 Case Study 04/26/2022 5) If Jessa sought your help, what advice would you give her in terms of the management of her career? If you had to make a prediction, do you think that Jessa will accept the Doha offer? Why or why not? If Jessa sought my help, I would want her to follow her heart at the end of the day. However, I would strongly recommend her to decide to decline the position in Doha. If I were to predict what she would do, I’d predict that she would accept the position against my advice simply based on the pattern of her behavior up until this point.
