Homework 02 1. What is Epistemology? Epistemology is a field of philosophy that revolves around the theory of knowledge. 2. What is empirical knowledge? and What is non-empirical knowledge? Empirical knowledge is knowledge perceived from a direct experience, history, background, and experimentation. Non-empirical knowledge is a method that uses current events, theory, and personal observations. 3. In a few sentences, explain the difference between empiricism (empiricists) and rationalism (rationalists). Empiricists believe that knowledge and concepts are gained from experience and experimentation. Rationalists believe that our knowledge and understanding derives from a logical stance, and thorough reasoning. 4. What is epistemic justification ? Epistemic justification has to do with a person’s belief being of right standing in regards to knowledge. 5. Briefly summarize the Justified True Belief (JTB) theory of knowledge. The JTB theory of knowledge requires all three conditions, which are justification, truth, and belief, to be met allowing the claim to have knowledge. This would mean there is a good reason leading to a good argument. 6. In a few sentences, summarize Gettier’s objection to JTB. Gettier’s objection to JTB has to be that it doesn’t take into account all of the necessary and sufficient conditions required in knowledge. 7. Briefly summarize the Cornman, Lehrer, and Pappas’ (CLP) theory of knowledge. CLP theory of knowledge does believe that JTB need to provide a sufficient condition for knowledge, so what this theory does is adds more to JTB, that way Gettier-type conflicts doesn’t work against it.
8. In a few sentences, summarize my (Prof. Hochstetter) objection to CLP. If I am correct, the objection would be you have to know whether a statement is true or not, because you can assume its accurate but not be 100% sure.
