Statesmanship as it relates to public administration reform and the future. Reform in the field of public administration is a constant factor that is always happening. There are changes that can not be predicted, so elected officials need to look at reforms. “Public administration is at crossroads. Once dominated by a technical-rational culture, public administration is now traveling three not necessarily compatible paths: technical-rational, entrepreneurial, and citizen participatory” (Bryer, 2007). With the constant changes in public administration it is hard to understand what type of reform would be needed. This is why a statesman is important for the field of public administration. A statesman is able to put others ahead of themselves so they are able to see what is not working and where reform would be needed. A statesman is able to prioritize what reform is needed right away and which could be pushed to a later date because it is not immediately needed. The challenges and opportunities that a would-be statesman would face in this area and the statecraft needed to lead successfully. As a statesman, there are challenges that might arise during the process of reform. First, a statesman is going to have to predict what the future holds and what needs to be reform right away. These changes are not easy to predict as things change daily so it will make the task hard for a statesman. Second, a statesman would need to predict during reform what could be taken out and what needs to be changed. This task is not easy because you have to look at what is going to benefit the people you are serving. You have to be objective regarding what is going to help them and what is costing money that is not working or being used. This could be a challenge because the statesman might not be the only person who is doing this and might not be able to influence the best decision. An opportunity that would arise would be the statesman is able to show their quality and how they are there to help others. This would show coworkers, citizens, elected officials what needs to be done and how things should truly be done. By doing reform and looking towards the future a statesman is able to see what things are doing wrong currently and how they can look at the future to see what needs to be done to benefit people. Biblical Perspective Change is not bad as it could have benefits once everything is completed. The Bible tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV). The Lord knows everything that is going to happen and will guide us through change and reform that are needed, and He will never lead us to where we do not need to be. This shows that everything happens according to God’s plan and he we need to trust in God. References Bryer, T. A. (2007). Toward a Relevant Agenda for a Responsive Public Administration.
