Reflections on Unit 1 – 4

Reflection on Unit 1 In Unit 1 the takeaway was about the legal aspect of teaching religion in public schools or what you can teach in your classroom. The first case I want to discuss is about the Abington School District vs. Schempp. This case was about them reading bible verses at the beginning of the day without comment but
that a child could be excused if their parent wrote an excuse for them. This guy in 1963 challenged this and he said that no state should require anyone. I agree with them in saying that a state government should not have laws requiring this. Schempp won his case court 8-1 and the courts said that this type of Bible reading was unconstitutional. This would be a key point that I took away from this because if they taught some part of the Bible for academic reasons that they could allow this. The next case was Florey vs. Sioux Falls School District which was about school holidays. The ACLU tried to sue the school district about the school holidays, and they lost saying that the district policy was acceptable. They said that it would help the students. The courts also went on to make sure that the schools were sensitive to students’ religious beliefs. The next case was Stone vs. Graham, which was about the Ten Commandments being posted in the classrooms which says that it serves no such educational purpose. The courts in this case said that the Bible may be used in the study of history, civilization, ethics, and comparative religion. The next case was Lynch vs. Donnelly is about the public display of the nativity scene. The courts states that it forbids hostility towards any religion. The takeaway from all these cases is that the supreme court did not take the Bible out of the classroom it just defined how to teach from the Bible to use it in education, which was that it had to be in an educational context. Reflection on Unit 2
My reflection on session 2 is that there are standards from each state that lists the Bible to teach from. Mississippi was featured on this video in session 2 for eighth grade History. It stated that the students had to describe and explain the role of the Founding Fathers (Washington, Adams, Hamilton, and Jefferson). (Gateway to Better Education, 2023) I believe that the Founding Fathers wanted our children to learn about how our country what our country was founded on. Because Thomas Jefferson said that if our
liberties are from God and we remove God then we would be removing our liberties. I believe that he is right because even though we cannot outright teach about the Bible at least it is still in our standards in some sort of way that our children will learn a little bit throughout their time in school. I also believe that the National Association of Music is correct when they said that studying and playing religious music can be done in an educational context. They also said that “the omission of this type of sacred music would result in the incomplete education experience.” Gateway to Better Education, 2023). This is so true because I believe if the children did not study or play this type of music what would they play. The music from today would not help them learn anything about the Bible. The music I played when I was in school even though back then I thought was boring reminds me that is where I got my love for music. Reflections on Unit 3
This session really made me look at the confidence that one would have teaching about other religions, do we have the same confidence when it comes to teaching about the Bible. No, I do not believe
that we do. We are afraid of what we can do or say when it comes to the Bible. Why? I believe it is because people are so afraid of hurting other people’s feelings or getting sued if you said the wrong thing. Throughout these videos it has showed that you can teach about the Bible it has to have an educational context. The predominate faith in the American Culture is Christianity. The 2
nd
major radio station is gospel. So, why if there is so many of people claiming to be Christian then why are we are afraid to teach about the Bible when it is in our standards to teach about the Bible. This world has tried to make everything politically correct or done so that nobody’s feelings get hurt or offended by something. In the video for Session 3, it talks to different college professors about how important religion is or the teaching of the Bible is. Most of them say that it is important because when you get to college there will be more in-depth teachings from the Bible because I have witnessed it first-hand. I am finishing up my master’s degree in teaching and it has been sometimes difficult for me with the Christian Worldview because I did not have anything related to the Bible growing up in the public school in MS.
