Running Head: DEATH PENALTY 1 Death Penalty Ohilda Ortega Kaplan University Ohilda Ortega
Death Penalty 2 Dear Governor Rick Scott, Allow me to take this time to reflect on Capital punishment and to let you know where I stand on this subject. I believe that the death penalty is a very drastic measure that can’t be change. For that reason we need to take the time to think of whether it should be apply or not. There are circumstances where people could think that death penalty should be apply like a case of mass murder, the killing of children, vicious rape. The retributive moral theory would agree with those people. It has to do with the past, not the future, therefore, if someone kills or commits a heinous crime the punishment should match the crime committed. If I were a retributivist I would not be concern with a punishment that would bring good consequences, but with making he person pay for the crime committed (Thiroux, J. P., & Krasemann, K. W, 2011). Dealing with consequences is left for utilitarianisms. But then, I am more like a utilitarian. I believe that the punishment should bring the greatest good to the greatest amount of people (Thiroux, J. P., & Krasemann, K. W, 2011). Here is where I consider that death penalty should not be use. If by mistake one innocent gets sentence to death, it would be one too many. This will be a moral wrong. Besides, I follow the divine command theory and we are not to play God and to take a human life because of his / her wrongdoing. If we do so, we will be acting the same way this person did. A life in prison would be more appropriate from my point of view. Locked away, the person will not have the ability to hurt anyone else and will have the rest of his / her life to think about what he / she did. At the end of the day, killing the criminal will not bring the victims back. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I really hope that you reflect on it before approving the death penalty in the State of Florida. Ohilda Ohilda Ortega
