Philosophy of Education 2 When talking about the concept of education and the philosophy behind it, it is important to understand that there are multiple different beliefs held by educators and schools. Individuals involved in education each have their own understanding of what education should look like. A teacher’s philosophy of education can significantly influence what and how students are taught. My educational philosophy is centered around the idea that, as educators, our job is to create thoughtful citizens who respect themselves and others. My students will someday be a part of the community, and I believe that it is my job to provide them with the necessary skills to be thriving members of that community. In addition to creating thriving members of the community, I think that it is important to teach students how to learn. Learning how to learn is a key element in education because students need to understand how to find answers to any questions or problems that might arise once they leave school. During school, students are responsible for themselves and to their education. Students should enter school every day ready to learn. If students are not invested in their learning, it can become increasingly difficult for the teacher to teach new information to their students because the students are not interested in the material. Students should also come to school ready to participate in class discussions and assignments. By engaging academically in class, students can maximize their opportunity for learning. Active engagement also sets the tone for the entire classroom, which helps the teacher with classroom management. Students should always acknowledge that they are a part of an academic learning community. Each person, both students and teachers, are responsible for taking ownership of their actions in a way that values building a safe and effective classroom environment. A teacher could increase the active engagement in their classroom by asking questions, beginning open-ended classroom discussions, and creating whole group activities with the help of technology.
