Discussion Thread: Ethical Standards
The ethical principles in the human service fields and the teachings of the
Bible overlap in their approach to treating and caring for others, yet they also
provide us with unique perspectives and emphases. Martin (2022) identifies
that the general theme of the ethical standards for human service providers
lies in valuing the dignity of others, ensuring no harm is done, showing
respect for the integrity of individuals, and preventing exploitation. This is
also reflected in the Bible through Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (
King
James Bible
, 1769/2022). Both the Bible and ethical standards for human
service providers place a strong emphasis on the value and worth of
individuals and treating others with respect regardless of their background.
In reviewing the ethical standards identified by the National Organization for
Human Services (NOHS) the first standard they recognize when working with
clients is to recognize and build on the client and community's strengths
(
National Organization for Human Services
). This is also a theme in the Bible
and can be seen in Thessalonians 5:11 "therefore encourage one another
and build one another up, just as you are doing" (
King James Bible
,
1769/2022). With both we see commonalities with underlying themes of
treating others with integrity and transparent, honest communication. While
we see many similarities with the themes between both the Bible and ethical
standards, there are differences as well. The NOHS provides ethical
standards in relation to responsibility to the field and provides standards that
help promote growth as a profession and for the providers who fall under this
profession where the Bible promotes growth and how that growth serves a
higher purpose. Another difference is that the Bible speaks specifically about
the importance of selflessness, love, and forgiveness, even referencing our
enemies where the NOHS focuses on compassion and empathy. Both ethical
standards in the human service fields and biblical teachings share many
similar principles of not judging, treating others with respect, doing no harm,
and honoring integrity. However, the Bible provides a spiritual framework for
treating others that includes love and forgiveness. This differs from the NOHS
ethical standards that focus on professional guidelines that have a context of
societal norms.
Colossians 3:12: So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and
beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience (
King James Bible
, 1769/2022)
Philippians 2:4 - Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also
to the interests of others (
King James Bible
, 1769/2022)
Proverbs 21:13 - Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself
call out and not be answered (King James Bible, 1769/2022)
