Dear Senator Smith,
I am a current registered nurse and an active, young African American woman in the community.
I am writing this letter to ask you to consider supporting the Black Maternal Health and
MOMnibus Act (H.R. 3305). This bill has been introduced to give additional aid to African
American women to help with pre and postnatal care, as well as increasing educational training
on fair maternity care.
When I was 10 years old, I had the opportunity to be around the experience during my
godbrother’s birth. Unfortunately, that experience was a near-death one for both my godmother
and her son, and it changed the trajectory of my career path. After learning that African American
women are more than twice as likely to die during childbirth, I became laser focused on ensuring
representation is present (Orvos, 2020). As this statistic shows, there is still a significant racial
disparity within healthcare. This bill would enable educational training to be integrated into
perinatal workforces to promote trust between patient and provider (Orvos, 2020). Addressing
this issue was the first step, and now we must take action.
After doing additional research and seeing that your Data to Save Moms Act is included within
the MOMnibus Act, I implore you to extend your consideration (H.R. 3305). I can recognize that
this bill will not completely halt the maternal mortality rate of black and brown people, but it will
help to exponentially lower it. Being that you have such close links to education, I would love to
hear your thoughts further on the issue. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I
look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Evonna Guillaume, RN
