Synthesis Paragraphs:
The evolution of a mentor's philosophy of mentoring over time is a complex and multifaceted process, as
discussed by numerous researchers in the field (Al Makhamreh & Stockley, 2019). The evolution of a
mentor's philosophy of mentoring involves a shift from traditional knowledge provision where the
mentor's primary role is to impart knowledge, information, or guidance in a more didactic or instructive
manner to more learner-centered approaches.
A progression supported by Lechuga's study (2011) on faculty-graduate student mentoring as mentors
gain experience, they recognize the importance of emotional support and fostering individual well-being,
moving beyond directive roles to create an inclusive and collaborative mentorship environment that
benefits the growth and resilience of their mentees. As mentors gain experience and engage with diverse
mentees, they may recognize the importance of adapting their approach. In the mentorship process, the
mentor's philosophy may evolve to become more learner centered (Hill, Ward, Seay, & Buzenski, 2022).
They start valuing the individuality of their mentees, fostering critical thinking, and encouraging mentees
to take ownership of their learning and growth.
The available research did not include students who dropped out of their programs because of
experiences with dysfunctional care. This raises the question of whether they quit because they were
less resilient? Or is it possible that their well-being was harmed so severely that quitting the program
was their only option.
