Jesse, I enjoyed reading your thread. You stated that virtue ethics was focused on the person over their actions. However, I would love to add that we must remember that virtue holds that morality is more than doing the right thing. 1 Virtue also determines morality by addressing the positive aspects of a person’s character related to being more like Christ. Rae also supports this statement by informing us that virtue is consistent with the biblical emphasis on becoming more like Christ in Character. 2 Consider if a man commits adultery, a physical act of forbidden sex that goes against the Ten Commandments. This shows the negative actions of a man’s character. However, Christ dives deeper into a man’s nature and points out that he can commit adultery even if he does not perform the physical act. Jesus’ outstanding character was not limited to just sex but extended to other areas considered essential for social flourishing. This is why having Christ-like characteristics is important and is one of the keys to integrity. You also argued that divine command and virtue ethics theory are similar because they are based on what is commanded by God, which I believe is correct. You emphasized removing individual bias when following God’s Word. This is essential because God’s Word is always objective, in and out of the Scripture, and will never be subjective. The birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ severed a purpose in God’s commands of what one’s character should be when serving Him. Divine knowledge is not only related to the Bible. It is also associated with natural law. There was a purpose for Jesus in God’s plan to save humanity, and we should never forget it. Without Jesus dying on the Cross to commit our sins, we would all be damned forever.  For Christians, religion is essential for their daily process of determining what is moral. This is why divine command, duty, and natural law are essential. Christian ethics should always be centered around following God’s commandments on making the right moral choices. However, there are so many versions of the Bible that it is hard to pinpoint God’s true Word related to morality. This is where Satan comes in and breaks down the understanding of Christian ethics to the point of confusion. For centuries, people have debated Christian ethics and which theory is right or wrong, which causes people not to understand the true essence of morality.  Your thread also lets us know that examining one’s self-motivation is good and can be beneficial to understanding morality. However, understanding righteousness goes deeper than self- inspiration. We cannot leave out the word faith and how it is based on Christ-like characteristics of believing God can do anything. Self-assumption on what is ethical will lead you to have subjective thoughts about things such as faith and virtue. We should thank Jesus every day that He was not about self-interest in spreading God’s Word. Throughout the Bible, you will read about Jesus being accused of disobeying God’s commandments in the Old Testament and having poor ethical standards for misinterpreting the Word. This leads me to you saying that serving and walking with integrity are characteristics of God. We will never be like God or have His characteristics. God is a spirit, and we are flesh. This is why He sent His Son for us to have Christ-like attributes. Furthermore, the only way to God is through Christ. 1. Rae, Scott.
