Week 2 Religion and Ethics 1. What would a divine command ethicist say is the moral thing to do here? Why would they say that? Do you agree with the divine command ethics? Why or why not? Many modern religions teach that God has laid down guidelines for how we should conduct ourselves, yet it's understood that God allows us the freedom to choose whether to follow these rules (Rachels, 2018). For a divine command ethicist, the decision to refuse a blood transfusion aligns with their religious beliefs, as they view it as morally wrong and contrary to their faith's teachings. As a nurse, I am dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to every patient. While I may not personally agree with the family's decision to decline a blood transfusion for their child, I recognize and respect their religious convictions. Despite any disagreement, I would honor their wishes out of respect for their beliefs. Although I do not consider myself deeply religious, I hold the belief that certain actions are inherently right because they align with what is commanded by a higher power. If providing a blood transfusion goes against the moral code of the child's religion, I would refrain from doing so, even knowing the potential consequences. The thought of being held accountable if the child were to suffer harm or death due to the lack of a blood transfusion is daunting. However, I am mindful of the importance of acting in accordance with ethical principles and showing sensitivity to the religious beliefs of those under my care, even if it means facing difficult decisions and potential legal repercussions. 2. Evaluate what a natural law ethicist would say is right to do. Do you agree with them? Why or why not? The theory of natural law suggests that we have an inherent obligation to care for our fellow human beings. It asserts that being kind and helpful to others comes naturally to us as social creatures who rely on the support and companionship of one another. In fact, someone who shows complete indifference towards others is seen as radical (Rachels, 2018). From the perspective of a natural law ethicist, the morally right course of action would be to provide the child with a blood transfusion, as it aligns with the ethical duty to save lives and care for those in need. I personally agree with this viewpoint, as it emphasizes our responsibility to do everything in our power to preserve and improve the well-being of our patients. As healthcare professionals, it is our duty to explore all available options to ensure the best possible outcomes for those under our care. 3. Given what you said are the right things to do, what would an emotivist say about your positions and judgments? What role does subjectivity play here in determining what is ethical? Emotivists argue that moral language primarily serves to express emotions and influence others, lacking any inherent cognitive content (Messerly, 2016). Therefore, when individuals disagree on ethical matters, they are essentially attempting to persuade one another to adopt their own viewpoint and follow their suggested course of action. In the case of the child needing a blood transfusion, while I may believe my position and judgment to be ethically sound, it remains immoral according to the child's religious beliefs. This highlights the subjective nature of morality, where what is considered "right" or "wrong" can vary depending on individual perspectives and cultural or religious backgrounds. Personally, I believe the determination of what is morally right can be influenced by one's interpretation of divine commands.
