Chapter 3 1. Address the case study 3-5b. What can the teacher do to address the issues? I think that the teacher could ask Hayden’s parents to send out an email to have the parents help their children understand what Autism is. I think that the parents of the other students should be notified and made aware of the situation to help prevent it. I think the teacher can have a lesson about Autism and do an activity about it to help the other students learn about it. The teacher could also play a video or show a movie showing the other students that Autism isn’t contagious and that it is okay to be different. I would also suggest learning the definition of contagious so that they all understand what they are saying. 2. Student Activity #6- Reflect on your own early elementary experiences. Describe your own experience with inclusion, or lack thereof. For elementary school, I went to a private Catholic school from preschool to first grade. This school didn’t have students with disabilities, and they didn’t have students from different backgrounds. That school was not very inclusive to others, I didn’t feel like I wasn’t included because I was a young white girl who blended in with the other students. After first grade that school closed and I transferred to public school this was a very big culture shock for me, there were more cultures within the classroom and there were students that maybe had learning disabilities but never any students that had physical disabilities. I didn’t feel like both schools I went to for elementary school were very inclusive, it was always just the “normal” students in the classroom. 3. Explain the practice of a multicultural approach to early learning (100-200 words) (including a rationale for why this practice is important) Multicultural education advocates the belief that students and their life histories/experiences should be placed at the center of teaching and learning. Also believes that the teaching should occur in a context that is familiar to students while also addressing multiple ways of thinking. I think that this type of learning makes sure that there is diversity in the classroom and helps everyone feel important and included. Students learn about different cultures, and this helps them later in life when they may come in contact with a person of a different culture and they will feel more comfortable knowing some information about their culture. This type of learning allows students the interact with a wide range of social groups and brings them more confidence when socializing with others. I think that the only disadvantage is making sure that the curriculum is designed effectively enough that it is diverse and not to complex for the specific grade.
