WEEK 7: Case study On Ethics
Hello everyone,
I got case study 3.1, so here we go. It is a bit of a long one but
there was a lot to talk about!!!
1. Based on the skills approach, how would you assess Dr. Wood’s leadership and his relationship to the members of the Elder Care Project team? Will the project be successful?
The situation that Dr. Wood is facing is could be a very frustrating situation. As noted, he is used to working alone or with at most two other people. With all his previous work and achievements Dr. Wood is in no way lacking in the technical department.
His people skills on the other hand seem to be lacking, which is hard to say since he is so renowned by everyone except his own team. There is a saying that someone told me a while ago and it went on the lines of, “praise in public, yet criticize in private”. Dr. Woods frustration with the lack of a budget is understandable, but that is not something that he should take out on his team. Not everyone can make sense of putting in extra unpaid hours. That just is not how the world works. Dr. Woods conceptual skills are also in the grey area. He has the ability to think of the big picture and secure extra funding for the pamphlets but is also lacking in seeing how his
treatment of his team will affect employee retention.
I think it is hard to say if the project will succeed. Lack of funding and his leadership style will make his colleagues want to search for another job. If Dr. Wood can change his treatment of his team, their motivation will make the project successful. On the other hand, if he does not change it will fail.
2. Does Dr. Wood have the skills necessary to be an effective leader of this research team?
Skills to
be a leader can be learned through a level of experience. Dr. Wood has never worked with a team this big before. He has
the technical skill to lead but is lacking in the human or people
skills, so he is missing the skills needed to lead this team, but they can always be learned.
3. The skills model describes three important competencies for leaders: problem-solving skills, social
judgment skills, and knowledge. If you were to coach Dr. Wood using this model, what competencies would you address with him? What changes would you suggest that he make in his leadership?
Starting off with problem solving, Dr. Wood has a good understanding of this which is shown by how he secured additional funding for the pamphlets which were due.
Here is the issue though. A big part of problem solving is identifying the issue, and the issue he is currently having is his lack of social judgment skills. This leads into both problem solving and human skills. He is unable to see his team is experiencing burnout and is also not praising his team when he should. He is only bringing up the bad, which is making the work environment hit an all-time low.
Dr. Woods knowledge level is his greatest strength, he is in no way lacking in this aspect. Overall, he needs to work the most on his people skills.
