In your opinion, how would virtue ethicist answer the question: "What should the Government of Canada do in order to correct or compensate for the atrocities done to the Indigenous people in the past, for example forcing Indigenous children to study in residential schools?"
Virtue ethics posits that an act is morally right because it is what a virtuous person would do in that situation. Virtue ethics places the cultivation of good character and moral virtues as a guide for a person’s actions and decisions. To correct the atrocities committed against the Indigenous people, in my
opinion, a virtue ethicist would first acknowledge and recognize what was done to the Indigenous people as a very traumatizing act by the Canadian Government and then find the best ways to correct these injustices. I believe that the Indigenous people should be allowed to live their lives as they want to. The Indian Act also needs to be abolished as it tells the Indigenous people how the Canadian government wants them to live their lives. All remaining residential schools should be discontinued. The act of the Indigenous person losing or gaining status should be stopped. The Indigenous people should be asked what they expect from the government, the government should be ready to listen and act according to the demands of the Indigenous people provided it is a virtuous act that promotes justice for
the people of the Indigenous communities.
