The Policy Advocacy Challenge I chose was Challenge 2.6. This insert describes how hospitals in Los Angeles were dumping patients onto the streets (Skid Row) because they did not have a home address (Jansson, 2018). The patients required additional care after being discharged from the hospital which was supposed to be arranged by the hospital, but since they did not have a home address, they were dumped on the streets as if they were nothing. These individuals were left on the streets with no medication, no instructions on how to care for themselves or provided with resources or provisions for them to stay at rehabilitation centers where they could receive
the care they needed. The text also mentions that more than 50 of these cases were investigated by the Los Angeles City Attorney resulting in hospitals paying millions of dollars in settlements and being ordered to pay stiff fines as well as requiring them to develop protocols for discharging homeless patients to ensure their dignity and continuum of care (Jansson, 2018).
This social problem is defined by Gretchen Heidemann Ph.D. and Bruce Jansson, Ph.D. who are providing ethical reasoning from the perspective of social workers who are actively working in the field, providing services for the community (Jansson, 2018). They have identified how several homeless individuals were not provided with the proper care or service they need after
being discharged from the hospital.
This text causes us to think about what ethical principles were not followed when treating this population. These patients were not treated with respect or dignity when they were released from the hospital. They were not provided with the additional services they needed. They were dumped on the
streets with no consideration for their quality of life or well - being. The NASW code of ethics states that as professionals we must enhance human well - being and help meet the basic human needs of all people (NASW,2021)
We strive to make sure individuals who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty are treated with respect and dignity and provided services they need (NASW, 2021). We cannot place judgement or treat individuals differently. Policy advocacy challenge 2.6 shows the importance of making sure hospitals or agencies that provide services are make sure everyone is treated equally and provided services they need, no matter what their social status is. We have to make sure policies are in place that protect to rights and needs of all individuals. When we determine that organizations are discriminating against an individual or group of people, we need to make sure they are held accountable, and policies are in place to make sure changes are made for the better.
The information in this section shows that many homeless individuals were not provided the care they needed after being released from the hospital. It also shows the need to advocate for these individuals making sure they are
treated with respect and not discriminated against because they are live in poverty. This text does not go into detail as to what the current polices were for the hospitals. There is no mention as to why these individuals were not provided with a social worker to help them with securing a place to stay where they could receive the care they needed. It also does not mention the ethical values the hospital is supposed to follow when treating patients or how they justified the way they treated these individuals.
