The discussion requirements each week are to post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days to earn full participation.
This includes your initial post (which should meet the word count requirements stated below) and 2 substantive replies to other students or to your instructor’s posts.
Due Thursday
In the first 2 weeks of this course, you learned about factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking. This week, you learn about the effects of social errors, biases, and fallacies. These elements are helpful in persuasion.
After completing the Learning Activities for the week, please respond to
all the inquires below. Your response should be a minimum of 175 words total (approx. 50
words per question).
Review the Four Social Errors and Biases presented in Ch. 4 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life
. Which of the social errors/biases in the book are you most affected by? How can you overcome this social error/bias?
Ch. 5 describes fallacies (when an argument seems to be correct but isn't). What is one fallacy you have personally used or seen in an argument? Discuss how critical thinking skills will make you less likely to be influenced by arguments that are based on fallacies and faulty reasoning.
Reflect on the learning activities, concepts, ideas, and topics covered this week. Discuss the most interesting activity or concept you learned this week and mention any concepts that are still a bit confusing to you or that you have questions about.
After reviewing the Four Social Errors and Biases in Chapter 4, I mostly relate to “One of us/one of the” error. I relate to this error because I think of myself as a hardworking, independent, and strong individual. I respect others who are the same, and those who have worked hard to be where they are today. I tend to be
very suspicious and quiet around others who are not, like people who have a “poor me” mentality, and want someone else to fix their problem, or give them everything. I do not dislike these people; I am just very guarded and keep my comments to myself when I am around them. To overcome this error, I can put myself in their shoes so to speak and relate to them in a way. Everyone needs help from time to time, even me and I can always lend a helping hand to those who really need it. A fallacy that I have experienced in the past when having an argument with someone is an informal fallacy. An informal fallacy is mistaken
reasoning that occurs when an argument is psychologically or emotionally persuasive but logically incorrect. The other person was ignorant, inconsistent, and had a false dilemma. Fallacies and faulty reasoning can affect critical thinking skills by manipulating facts, drawing false conclusions, or distracting me
from the real issue. Critical thinking can help me by being influenced my fallacies and faulty reasoning by reserving judgement on a message until I have examined claims, logic, reasoning, and the evidence used. Due Monday
Reply to at least 2 of your classmates’ or your instructor's posts with substantive replies. (These should add to/build on the discussion in a substantial way, which typically means they are at least 75-100 words, or several sentences long). Be constructive and professional in your responses.
