Topic
My topic is end of life care. Why I Chose This Topic
I chose this topic because this week we have been talking about it and about dying with dignity. This caught my attention and has intrigued me to learn more about physician-assisted suicide. The ethical debate on this topic is not something I was ever familiar with so it will be interesting to dig into both sides of the argument. Pro Arguments
The main argument that supports issues in physician-assisted suicide is to alleviate the pain and suffering patients have to go through due to their terminal illness. Some ethical theories that I found to support these arguments are ethics of care, virtue ethics, autonomy, and utilitarianism. Con Arguments
The ethical arguments that oppose this topic is that it is morally wrong and there are hospice or palliative care programs to help with their pain. To assist patients to their death goes against the sanctity of life. Some ethical theories that support this side are the Kant theory and the moral theory. My Current Stance on the Topic
The side that I find the most compelling is the pro argument. I believe that patients should have the right to be able to do whatever they chose to do with their own life. Their choice should be respected. Not everyone knows what it is like to experience excruciating pain that is so
unbearable from having a terminal illness so it should not be forced to keep dealing with it.
