Name: Course: Date: Instructor: Topic 4 Purpose Plan: Academic Life, Spiritual Life, and Career Directions: For this assignment, you will answer a series of questions designed to help you find and plan your purpose. These questions are broken into an Academic Plan, a Spiritual Plan, and a Career Plan. Please respond to each of the questions directly on this document (the boxes will expand as needed) and then answer the two reflection questions at the end of the document. Academic Plan To help you get the most out of your GCU experience, GCU offers support, services, and resources that enhance your academic pursuits. Find your major and program on the following website https://www.gcu.edu/degree- programs and complete the table below: In which program of study are you enrolled, or plan to enroll? I am currently enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Justice Studies. What are some of the program core courses you are looking forward to taking and why? Of all the core courses I am most excited about, Criminal Behavior and Victimology, seems the most interesting. Threat Assessment and Behavioral Analysis also seems like it will be very interesting. For me, classes like Criminal Behavior and Victimology and Threat Assessment and Behavioral Analysis are the most exciting because I have always been interested in human behavior and what makes people do the things they do. If there is something to be taught and learned about criminal behavior and how to stop or know ahead of time if something dangerous is going to happen, I want to learn it. I love to help people and would love to also be able to teach people how to handle dangerous people or situations. Which courses do you anticipate being the most challenging? Explain why. The courses I anticipate to be the most difficult for me are any of the math courses. For me, math has never come easy. I seem to have a hard time retaining math for long periods of time and it has just always been like that for me my whole life. Luckily, GCU has the resources attainable to me for help if needed. Spiritual Plan GCU is committed to integrating faith across all aspects of the GCU community. This stems from GCU’s mission to educate students from a Christian perspective and to prepare them for careers that honor God while serving others. Read about GCU’s “One Foundation” and watch all three videos, “One Foundation: Integration of Faith, Learning, and Work,” “Ethical Positions Statement,” and “Doctrinal Statement Introduction” located at https://www.gcu.edu/why-gcu/christian-identity-and-mission . After clicking on the link, scroll down to the One Foundation section to read, and then click on the video in that section. You will need to click on the drop down within the first video window to access all 3 videos.
What did you take- away from these videos? How can you apply this to your experience while at GCU? (50-100 words) One foundation is the bedrock of Grand Canyon University. One foundation teaches Grand Canyon University Students faithfulness, excellence and service to God and neighbors, regardless of background or faith. Grand Canyon is a diverse University that integrates Christian faith and Christian worldview into the classroom. Grand Canyon University prepares the student to go out into the world, find out their purpose and use Christianity in their career and in their experience at Grand Canyon University. I can apply this to my experience at Grand Canyon University by becoming closer to my Baptist faith and background while I am on my academic journey. I can also learn to integrate my Christian faith into my future career to help others using Christian worldview and my Christian beliefs. What does service outside of the classroom mean to you? How can you apply service while at GCU? (50-100 words) Service outside of the classroom to me means that treating everyone, regardless of faith or background, with gentleness and kindness. Service outside of the classroom means integrating my Christian faith in my endeavors and career in life when possible and also showing people the way to god. I plan on applying service while at GCU by always being selfless, faithful, and non judgmental to my fellow peers. I also plan to always try to excel in and learn to be the best Christian I can be while at GCU and as a person from now on. Career Plan Grand Canyon University offers several career service tools to help you discover potential career paths, build a resume, search for employment, and more. Take a few minutes to take the Career Compass survey located at https://www.focus2career.com/Portal/Register.cfm?SID=810 (Access Code: Purpose). You can watch the video below to assist you with the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/playlist? list=PLnvvHOt5LvE8yBMYeHV4mGPW88Q86ftmw . Even if you have completed an assessment such as this in the past, it is good to reassess yourself every so often to reevaluate your goals, focus, and direction based on your growth. After you complete the survey, fill in the following table. Research the details of your Career Compass results, and then list and describe at least three job descriptions. 1. Criminal Justice Professor- teaches students at a college or University about Criminal justice and the various aspects of criminal justice law 2.Healthcare social worker- works with people, their families, and the people around them to find solutions to their problems. 3. Counseling educators- responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising educational programs. Based on your results, what surprises did you find? If there are none, explain why. (100-150 words) What surprises me the most from my results from my career compass is that one of the jobs that was listed for me is Healthcare social worker. My mother and nana are both social workers for special needs and the mentally challenged so I have been around that career my whole life. My mother has always said that I would do well working with people with special needs because even as a young child I always advocated for their clients and introduced and normalized her clients to my friends that were not used to people with special needs. Special needs people will always have a place in my heart and so will helping improve their lives so having healthcare social worker show up in my compass career is quite a surprise to me.
