Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen
People often come together to form communities and develop cultures based on similar values, morals, and perspectives on certain issues such as politics and religion. As people implement their values and beliefs, others will begin to embrace these and adapt them in a way that suits their identity. Those people then go on to share their values and beliefs with others and
encourage them to adapt to their beliefs. Those people will create more communities replicating these beliefs, which creates global citizens. People who are aware of others and their cultures are
more likely to live in peace and unity. Sharing cultural beliefs helps people around the world stand united. Distinction Between Globalism and Globalization
Globalism and globalization are two distinct terms although some may think they could be interchangeable. As cited by Arditi, (2004), globalism is “the ideology of rule by the world market.” Meaning, globalism is the ideology of being able to send and receive people and merchandise among other items from nation to nation without barriers. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to the transportation of goods between certain foreign countries, often due to distrust and hatred between nations. Globalization is the “integration of countries and peoples of
the world,” explains Roman et al. (2009). This means globalization is the process of nations expanding economically and culturally because of international trading. As Stucke, (2009) explains, some economists suggest that the “essence of globalization is delocalization.” Delocalization is how countries would expand because manufacturing would be scattered among different countries, which would boost the economy. Global Citizen in the World of Advanced Technology
3
Technology has become increasingly more important in day to day life over the past several years. Because of these advances, people from around the world can communicate easily
and quickly, whereas without these advances, trading was very limited. . According to Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013), “global citizenship is defined as awareness, caring, and embracing cultural diversity while promoting social justice and sustainability, coupled with a sense of responsibility to act.” Being a global citizen in the world of advanced technology means utilizing technology to become culturally aware of others and welcoming diversity while promoting social justice and environmental sustainability. Being a global citizen also means acting to promote cultural diversity and acceptance among all nations. This would help me academically, professionally, and personally because I grew up in a very small community with little to no diversity, so while I have learned a lot about other cultures and populations, I have a lot more to learn. Being culturally aware allows one to relate to others easier which can be helpful in all areas of life. Disagreement Between Theorists About Global Citizenship
There are disagreements about the definition of global citizenship because they have different perspectives. Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013) explain that theorists “draw from diverse disciplines and perspectives (e.g., political, theological, developmental, educational) to define the construct. Because theorists have different disciplines, they often do not see topics such as global citizenship the same way, which can cause confusion and disagreement on the definition. One type of theorist may focus on ethics while another may focus their definition on their personal political views creating very different definitions of the same term. I would define
global citizenship by being culturally aware of others and objective while advocating for acceptance among all nations.
