After viewing Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Teaching: Reflections from Today's Educators and the “SCRIP Presentation", analyze which of the 5 issues in the video stood out to you. Write
a thread presenting your reaction in an objective manner. In your
first paragraph response, summarize the situation taking place in the video through the lens of your ethical perspective. Answer the following question in your summary: "Which issue discussed in the video is of considerable importance to you and why?" In the second paragraph, choose one of the SCRIP dispositions, briefly define it, and provide an explanation of your response to a future situation through the lens of the disposition should you as a teacher find yourself in the position of facing the selected issue. Incorporate a biblical perspective in your response, which is supported by Scripture. Provide support for the main thread by including a minimum of 1 in-text citation and reference from the course text in current APA format in addition to a Scripture.
In the video, Issue 2 stood out to me the most. I don’t know if it’s because my mom was a social
worker and I heard a lot of stories of abuse or that I am in a position where I am a mandated reporter. Either way, the issue hits me differently than the others. Becoming a mandated reporter
showed me how quick one can be to second-guess whether or not to report something, especially when it comes to neglect (Ryan et al., 2016, Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Teaching: Reflections from Today's Educators, 2:05). Per my ethical code, neglect is a form of abuse and a child, especially a young child, need an adult to intervene in some way or another. However it can be challenging to determine at what level of neglect should I be making a report.
Unfortunately, there’s not much a social worker could do to correct emotional neglect. But when neglect is physically affecting a child (ie malnurishment, dehydration, exposure to the elements, lack of hygiene, etc.) it should be reported. In the SCRIP acronym, the very first letter is S, standing for Social Responsibility. This applies to the teacher personally and I can demonstrate having a sense of social responsibility by ensuring that I have a classroom suited for diverse learning methods that is in a positive and encouraging environment that promotes “student motivation, access, success and achievement”
(Taylor, n.d.). In a scenario where I am confronted with a student showing obvious signs of neglect, it is my responbsibility to report this neglect so that the student has access to what they
need and is given the best chance for success in their academic career. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you
and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand” (NLT, n.d.) Just as God encourages us and protects us, so to should we be protecting the children we teach, helping them and holding them up to be victorious in the way God plans for them to be.
