What are higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)? o Higher-order thinking skills can be used to answer questions that involve deeper thinking into a question. Skills such as comprehension and critical thinking are just a few that are well known and used often with higher-order thinking. Describe 2 or more strategies you would recommend teachers use to foster critical thinking skills in reading. o When incorporating activities into the lesson a teacher fosters critical thinking skills. I remember when I was younger, I always seemed to remember the things that were made fun, versus just sitting there listening to a lecture. Also, note- taking skills and a set way to take notes will help a child. Taking notes gives the child the ability to put their interpretation of the lesson into their own words. Describe 2 or more strategies that you currently use to foster critical thinking skills in either reading or writing. o Fostering 2 nd graders’ critical thinking skills has been quite interesting, to say the least! They are always wanting to tell me all the stories and how things are laid out. However, I have let them start writing in journals to be able to let out their imagination and then explain to me their reasoning behind it. I have also asked questions during reading time on their opinions, and they have had to tell me why they feel that way or what is a better way to explain their response. It is quite interesting, to say the least. Higher-order thinking skills can be used to answer questions that involve deeper thinking into a question.
